A few weeks back I noticed a paint peeling issue on the bottom edge of my front passenger door. Since I was due for a 5k mile service and recall fix, I figured I'd wait to get it looked at then.

The paint is flaking in the middle and most of the bottom edge up towards the front has a thin paint/touch mark bubbling issue. The dealership just informed me that this is an "impact" issue and not a paint issue.

All the other doors are fine, good solid white paint on the edges. No scratches or dents on my rocker or body to indicate impact or closing the door on anything. Anyone else have this issue?

    Notice the issue follows the door edge on the front;

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that doesn't look like an impact issue...

Yes, you somehow managed to get underneath the primer on a molecular level and impacted the paint from the inside out.

Do dealerships have some type of internal memorandum from Toyota to simply dismiss every single paint and rust claim?

This was also considered to be normal by my Toyota dealership.

That looks like it got sprayed with a dirty paint nozzle from the factory

That’s near the junction of the normal paint and the so-called impact resistant paint at the bottom edge of the body and bed, there’s the protective rock impact plastic over it so you know it came from the factory like this.

That pic looks like air bubbles trapped under the protective film, no?

The gray stuff is primer. The corrugated texture is because the paint on the lower half of your door and bed is supposed to look like that.

    2023 not included.. yet?

Also just got an update from the dealership, the supervisor doubled down saying this is because I struck something with the door.. even though the paint defect is going outwards and my rocker/sill/fenders have pristine unscratched paint.

just a little background info to add, I work at a Toyota manufacturing plant. My job is to inspect paint repairs..

The irony of working there.:smash:

Of course the dealer isn't going to admit fault and have to pay. I'd still petition Toyota corporate for an inspection and repair. Worse they can say is no. Not sure if 23's are included. I know Toyota changed up white paints from super white to ice cap. I'm sure they reworked the formula on ice cap for better adhesion.

The warranty rep actually came by yesterday and denied my claim. I'm at a loss, right now I'm trying to get a hold of some repair guys who are in Mexico to do a body # lookup and send me a copy of the #1 sheet and ICS documented factory repairs. My theory is they did a paint repair on this door and either set it on the door carrier before the paint fully cured (well this is always the case since the bake repairs are turned around within hours of painting) or something of this sort.

since the RH#2 door looks perfect on the edges with good paint, and both doors are painted at the same time - the difference points at a door-off repair being likely

I have a 2009 and that’s the way it’ll start, my thoughts are that yours will continue to peel in different spots, even under the hood, ask me how I know :annoyed:

I knew I would have issues with the paint eventually, I just.. was figuring I'd have a few years and was being optimistic thinking the new "ice cap" would solve the issue (we still use the same old super white at our plant)

My 2013 had tailgate damage during shipping and was repaired before I bought it, although I was never informed. I found out later after creating a profile on Toyota.com and made a few calls. The repairs looked great, but was worried it wasn't FACTORY paint. Tailgate still looks good, while I have flakes in other spots.

You tried to warranty .... that?

Get a bottle of touch up paint from the dealer, shake well, and dab those spots with Q-tip.

    That's a $10 solution to a 10 cent cosmetic complaint.

I guess it's kinda hard to tell without scale, but the part that is bare to the ED (third picture) is about 4 inches long and is flaking off on the exterior side, even if I cover it up with a Bandaid, the separation from paint to primer will just keep climbing up. It needs to be sanded above the separation and properly bake repaired
