I am not thrilled with the JBL system, I took the back of the truck part to see what we are working with and installed Kilmat Sound Deadening Mat.
The hardware in the rear doors is hidden, pop off the covers behind the handle and the window switch assembly to expose the screws. There is one screw that needs to be removed from the backside of the door paneling, attached to the handle.
The rear seat had four bolts and lifted the seats out. The rest of the interior was basic snap and pull, one of the easiest gens to disassemble and reassemble.
The rear speaker 6" is lighter than a feather, so it is going to be replaced.
The 10" sub(par) and the surrounding area have plenty of room to either put in a replacement 10" or a box. And there is plenty of room under the seats for an amp or two TBD.
I intend to replace the door rear door speakers and sub with the JL C3 series and get the matching components for the front bass and tweeter. I intend to test the sound quality with the stock AMP and heard unit to determine if I am satisfied merely upgrading the speakers or installing a sub box, and amp(s). I am looking to overdo it this time, I have posted pics of the rear doors and subwoofer. I will update as I go along with adding speakers and sound quality.
I will be tearing apart the front later this week.

Great stuff, does that sub even have a box? Seems like there is plenty of room for it

How difficult was it to pop the inner door panel off? and, did all of the plastic fasteners survive? I ask this for reasons other than sound systems, although I an planning a similar sound reduction system. I used Kilmat in my Dodge diesel, and it really helped.

I'm sorry but that is the worst excuse for a sub enclosure that I've ever seen. If I was in any way associated with that subwoofer installation, I would hang my head in shame and submit my resignation letter. Stevie Wonder could do a better job.

The panel popped off easily after removing the 3 screws, and one inner screw. See pix.

The head unit is most definitely integrated with the truck, no mods available. I am researching speakers and amps.

I am curious if this head unit still has the separate jbl amp that the previous gens did? If it doesn’t and everything is handled from the head unit I would think that would make it much easier to add your own amp & speakers

I belive the amp is separate, I have been unable to find a wiring harness/adapter as of yet, may take a few months.

Murph, my understanding is that it does have a separate amp & not integrated into the head unit, atleast thats what "beat sonic" told me.
I figured it would have been mounted on the side of the sub inclosure, maybe behind?

    Bob!!!
Thanks for doing this & taking pics......
Im so munch on the fence about getting an inline beatsonic amp, but theyre $300...
Thats substantial & can go toward reworking the entire system....

Also looking through your album & seeing the 25 cent piece size magnet, kind of helps me determine what direction im going, depending on your outcome....
Think reading various threads in the past, where guys tried upgrading speakers only & had poor results.

The prior gen head unit if it was a jbl stereo it required the jbl amp or the head unit would not work. Hopefully with this piss poor design in this gen they removed that “feature” so that people can swap in a different amp with out having to purchase additional equipment. You guys are the pioneers of the 4th gen so I wish you the best of luck!

If that is an "upgraded" audio system over stock then I am a one legged astronaut. Those speakers look like the cheapest paper type material that can be used. I would definitely upgrade the whole system.

No need for the well wishes! I can't hear past 12K anymore and I am in a truck, going down a road, usually with all my windows open. If I wanted some serious listening, I would put headphones on.

So Bob, the sub enclose is like 2 piece enclosure & theres still half attached to the back-wall of the cab behind the insulation. Any idea how large that is? Looking deeper into your pics....

I spent a couple of hours at Al & Eds Autosound today, and nothing will fit behind the seat easily, I am trying the JL Audio CS110LG-TW3, but it may require a custom build.
I ordered speakers today. I may have to modify the JL Sub in a box, but the speaker will get used either way.

Infinity Kappa 693C Fronts (No mid as of yet)
    Infinity KAPPA603CF 6-½ Rear
JL Audio CS110LG-TW3 Sub may fit. TBD

Amp is TBD no wiring harnesses are available as of yet.

I agree inregards to the sub box....
If youre infact from san diego since you mentioned al & eds...
Stereo depot recommended the ported box for the previous gens to me with the same tw3 10" as you selected, they said all the plastics will need to be removed permanently from behind the seat to fit the box....
    Not sure im there...
I emailed JL asking if theyre working on a solution, a loaded box to fit the 24...

    Their response:

Hello, I have no official info on the new Tacoma yet, but it is a very popular vehicle, so I imagine it is on the R & D list. It may be some time before we have anything available though.

The front 6x9's are for where, the front doors or the area in the top of the dash, assuming those are speaker areas & not vents...

6x9 in the door, tweeters in the uprights. I have not torn the dash apart yet, to determine the mid options.
