After losing my Vizsla 2 months ago, we are now a single dog family. We rescued Nilla 4 years ago, she had some poor dental health. Yesterday she had to have another tooth extracted, but she is a little sweetheart.

 

when I was a kid we had french poodles and the female had poor dental hygiene. Dad called Smokey Fang

 

Our Chihuahua had to have all of her teeth removed. We had to take her to a special animal dentist because she is so small and had very little jawbone. He had photos of himself working on gorilla, tiger and zebra teeth on the wall. She came through fine and now she's 10.

Nilla is 8 and is slowly getting there, but she still has some teeth. When we first rescued her, we had to extract like 5 teeth. We are thinking her previous owners were tired of dental care. We've never been small dog people, especially Chihuahuas, but her personality captured us. She is great for our family, and has played an emotional support dog role after I lost my mom to cancer and now after we lost our Vizsla 2 months ago to cancer. She is very in tune with our emotions.

 

Our vet and vet dentist said that dental issues are a genetic issue in Chihuahuas. Ours also has a liver shunt that requires permanent medication and special hepatic food. The hepatic food was a game changer though, like having a totally different dog.

Son just came home from an 11 month deployment to the Middle East. His dogs couldn’t be happier. Can see the absence of anxiety in their eyes. All is good in the land.
