How to select a hitch ball mount
|
|
|
---|---|---|
Three factors to considerThere are three main things to consider when selecting a trailer hitch ball mount: how much weight you are going to be towing, what size receiver tube your trailer hitch has and how much drop or rise your ball mount will need (below). |
Trailer weight vs capacityFirst, be sure to select a ball mount with enough gross trailer weight capacity to fit your trailer. Trailer weight is one of the most important aspects of towing, and you should never exceed the weight capacity of any component of your vehicle, trailer or trailer hitch setup. |
Hitch receiver sizeNext, determine what size shank you will need. Receiver tubes come in a handful of standard sizes, including 1-1/4, 2, 2-1/2 and sometimes 3 inches, so finding a ball mount to match is relatively easy. |
How to determine drop or rise
After you know how much weight you will be towing and the size of your receiver tube, you will need to determine the drop or rise necessary for your trailer.
Drop or rise is the amount of height difference between the trailer and your tow vehicle, whether that difference is positive (rise) or negative (drop).
The diagram offers a quick explanation for how to determine your needed drop or rise. Take the distance from the ground to the top of the inside of your receiver tube opening (A), and subtract it from the distance from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler (B).
B minus A equals C, the drop or rise.
Product Description
CURT class 3, or standard-duty, ball mounts are a step up from classes 1 and 2. They feature a 2" x 2" shank and have a higher weight capacity for towing heavy-duty trailers, including utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, single-horse livestock trailers and most recreational vehicle trailers. With class 3 trailer hitches being the most common type of trailer hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs, the class 3 ball mount, by association, is an excellent complement to this trailer hitch and these larger vehicles (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component; i.e. the vehicle, hitch, trailer, etc). This particular class 3 ball mount has a gross trailer weight capacity of 7,500 lbs. and a tongue weight capacity of 750 lbs. It features a length of 12-1/4", a drop of 2" and a possible rise of 3/4". Class 3 ball mounts are CNC-formed and robotically welded to ensure unwavering precision and dependable strength in each and every unit. We mechanically descale each one to provide a smooth surface for a long-lasting finish. This class 3 ball mount comes with a durable gloss black powder coat finish to protect against corrosion, scratches, UV damage and more to give it the thick skin it needs to face the road ahead.

Next, I bought an 8" hitch extension. That solved the issue of clearing the tire. I didn't like the sound of things back there when I drove over bumps. I also didn't like the stance of my back wheels when the camper was installed. Then after some research I realized the hitch extension was a terrible idea. I had no idea that it reduced my towing capacity by half.
After searching high and low, I found this ball mount and it was the perfect solution to my problems. It has enough length to clear the tire. I still get to keep my towing capacity. Finally, it is one solid piece so I don't have to worry about sounds and multiple places for failure. On top of that you can't beat the price.
I've used on two trips that were over 5 hours one way and had no issues. If you have a lighter camper that doesn't need a weight distribution hitch, this is a perfect solution to clear large rear tires on jeeps or Broncos.
This ball mount arrived with some small nicks and scuffs, plus some small metal and paint imperfections. Obvious is the asymmetry of the radius of the curved end of the flat...giving it what I would term a factory second appearance. The welds looked very good. I attached a new Curt hitch ball and noticed the ball was not nearly centered side to side on the flat. After removing the hitch ball, I measured the width of the steel on each side of the ball hole...both on top of the flat, and on the underside. On the top, the width of the metal measured .792" on the right and .692" on the left...with the side to side width of the ball hole measuring 1.024". On the underside, the width of the metal measured .767" on the right and .661" on the left. The side to side width of the ball hole on the underside was enlarged and measured 1.104"...apparently exceeding Curt's warning limit of being within 1/16" (.0625") over ball shank diameter. Inspecting the flat from the underside using a level, the ball hole does not appear to be quite concentric, nor does it appear to be drilled perpendicular to the flat. Compared to my 2 other recently purchased Curt Ball Mounts #45270 and #45280, this ball mount appears to be of markedly inferior quality...with quality control lacking here. Since it was purchased for its heavy 7500/750# weight rating in order to handle towing my loaded Nash travel Trailer, I must now question the safe load capacity of this ball mount in lieu of the centering, uniformity and measurement discrepancies of the ball hole that was drilled. I have been pleased with the purchase of a number of other Curt products, but this ball mount falls short of my quality expectations for a product I have come to rely on.
